The monthly meeting of the Grand Lake Rec Club was called to order by President, Brad Fisher at Lakeside Hideout, with approximately 31 members present. Vice President, Keith Seitz read the July minutes and Treasurer, Mike Metz read the Treasurer’s report

Financial Status and Expenses (Mike Metz, Treasurer)

  • The club has $20,231.48 in checking and $4,040.09 in the Mobley account.
  • Upcoming expenses:
    • Outdoorsmen bill estimated at $3,000–$4,000; final bill pending, with a request for the bill by the next meeting.
    • Davis Welding may require a couple thousand dollars.
    • Rock and Oil project planned for next year, estimated up to $5,000.
    • West Bank shelter house is funded; a proposal was made to fund a sidewalk to the restrooms, estimated at a couple thousand dollars, with an estimate to be presented at the next meeting for a vote.
    • Paving the bike path is expected to cost $20,000; working with LIA to cover up to half of the cost.
  • Outstanding bills could total $15,000–$20,000 if all proposed projects, including the West Bank sidewalk, proceed.
  • Members should submit any additional expected expenses to Amy for budgeting.

Projects, Maintenance, and Equipment

  • Safety Island Dock will be funded by LIA; no club funds needed.
  • Lighted buoys maintenance is ongoing; members are encouraged to check and report outage of lights as needed.  Issues with the sailboat club buoys and a duck foot buoy were noted and addressed. Two spare lights are available.
  • Behm’s Point light needs checking as it may not be working, and tree growth makes visibility difficult; trimming trees for better visibility was suggested.
  • Recent dock repairs at the Moose were completed using power poles and manual tools (a four-by-four), successfully avoiding the need for a crane.
  • Sonar equipment is operational; training is available for members (approximately 30-60 minutes), focusing on correct settings for local water conditions.
    • The sonar system tracks and documents activity, with updates planned for improved lake detail, specifically for Northern Ohio Lakes. It also allows for marking waypoints and tracking video/motion. The oil derrick was marked as it was not previously on the system.
    • Additional training sessions will be scheduled after dredging is complete, as this is a priority.
  • Tree removal at Safety Island Dock is planned due to a tree at the end of the dock that is expected to fall. The state is proposed to assist by bringing a barge and excavator towards the end of the year, after dredging is finished, to pick up and set the trees before the dock is rebuilt.
  • Prairie Creek is navigable, but only suitable for one boat at a time.
  • Plans to update the crank on the boat were discussed.
  • A first aid kit will be donated by Nick Katterhenry for the club, with a request for the most expensive one.

Community, Events, and Fundraising

  • Toxin levels are at an all-time low from 2009 to 2025, indicating positive progress. The Harmons treatment train property was purchased about a month ago, marking the last treatment train for all Grand Lake tributaries, which is a significant factor in the improved toxin levels.
  • Rustic Haven is under new ownership by Mike and Michelle Weaver, who also own Sloopies in Greenville. They are gutting the property for significant renovations, including an open layout, more seating for dining, new bathrooms, and outdoor features. They plan to sell their house and move to the area, with a target opening in early spring.
  • The October meeting location is under consideration due to anticipated transitions at Rustic Haven; suggestions for a new location are welcome.
  • The club will discuss at the next quarterly meeting in September to decide on year-end spending priorities, as current funds may not cover all proposed projects.
  • The Trevor Mobley fundraiser is scheduled for September 6th, featuring tip boards and live auctions from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.
  • Remaining funds for lights and related supplies are being held at $4,000 for future needs, as bills for these items have not yet been received.

Member Recognition

  • The club honored Tom Campbell, a member for 50+ years who recently passed away at 92. Tom will be greatly missed.
Club drawing was for $140, Kevin & Anna Katterhenry, paid, not present.  Next Club drawing is for $160.00
Next meeting: September 14th, Quarterly Meeting,  2PM @ Southshore Sportsman Club

2025 Dues are now due ($20.00 per family for the year)

Respectfully submitted by Amy Ruane, Secretary.
