October 12, 2014 Minutes

The meeting of the Grand Lake Recreation Club was held at The Sportsman’s Club.  President, Brad Fisher brought the meeting to order.  Treasurer, Tom Scheib gave the Treasurer’s Report.  Vice President, Jason Plattner read the minutes from the September meeting.  Approximately 40 members present.

The next meeting will be Sunday, November 9th at 2:00 at Beachpoint.

  • We donated $1,500.00 to both the Celina and Montezuma Fire Departments for safety and rescue equipment.  The LIA matched our donations and donated the same to both.
  • It has been a good year for the Rec Club.  We have really been getting our name out in the great things we have been doing and donations for good causes.
  • In March/April will be the election for Officers, so if you would like to run please be sure to attend these meetings.
  • There was discussion on the upcoming Christmas meeting.  Nan Schieb and Gail Sachs will be getting the presents for the party this year – thanks for volunteering ladies!  You are also more than welcome to bring a present for the drawing.   The Fishers and the Plattners will be making the food for the Christmas meeting.   We also plan to have a slideshow of all the events for the year to play at the meeting.
  • GLRC shirts are still for sale. There is a nice variety of colors and styles.  Short sleeve are $10.00 each and long are $15.00 each.  Be sure to pick one up at the next meeting!
  • The completed Oil  Derrick project has been getting a lot of good feedback.  It can be seen from many places around the lake.  It is set to blink 1 second on, 2 seconds off.  Keep your eye out for it!
  • This winter we will be working on a sign for the Oil Derrick to recognize the club and all the other individuals who contributed so generously.
  • Fall Lake clean-up went well. There were 3 boats and 6-8 people that helped.  With this in mind, the volunteers take their boats into shallow water and right up on rocks, etc, which can cause damage to their boats. On the same note, there was talk on acquiring a ‘work boat’ for the GLRC.  If anyone would like to donate their boat or knows someone who might, you could do so through St. Mary’s Community Foundation and receive a tax write-off. If it is a boat in need of work, that is great too.  We have many talented members who are capable of fixing up boats, who might volunteer their time.  Please email us at grandlakerec@gmail.com if you have any ideas.
  • The website continues to be updated and soon you will be able to ask question through it, please take a minute to visit and check it out: grandlakerecclub.com
  • The Corn Roast and Hog Roast turnouts have been ok, but we were thinking of maybe making it one big event.  We would like to bring it back where it used to be; a family event, playing games, etc – we are trying to come up with ideas to make a great event with a big turnout again.  Any suggestions, please email or tell us at the next meeting.
  • Lake drawdown has started, runs October 1st – March 1st, this is just an FYI, we are not sure on the specifics.  However it you have ideas/comments you would like to get to the State, you can email us and Brad will present to Brian Miller anonymously.
  • Dredging was down, they were having trouble with one of the motors.  Recently a new dredge was purchased, so next year should be better.
  • Grand Lake Marathon went well, there were approximately 1600 people at all the events.  It will be held again next year on the same weekend.  We received many “thank you’s” at the GLRC’s water-stop at Brad and Alisha’s house.  There was a monetary prize given for the best stand, we’ll be thinking about what we can do for next year.
  • We are getting the list of next year’s events together, we hope to have asap.
  • We were talking about fundraisers for next year.  Brad has been working on a possible concert on the beach over by Duckfoot, having bands on a barge.  This is in the works, details to come.
  • The Rec Club has purchased two new banners from Jon Lee’s company at a great price, just $40.00 each.  There are great to get our name out there at events.
  • The Gun Raffle went well this year, but was down significantly from last year.  Around 315 tickets sold.  After paying Big Bucks Firearms for the guns and the cost of producing the tickets, the Club profited around $829.00.  Thanks to all who participated!

Here are the winners:

  • Springfield XDS 4 in Brl. 9mm: Greg Reynolds of Eaton, Ohio
